Apple is stepping on the accelerator for its robotics business.
Recently, Apple CEO Tim Cook reorganized the company's artificial intelligence department, separating the robotics team from the AI and machine learning division and transferring it to the hardware department.
Analysts point out that this is Apple's major move to shift its strategic focus toward deep integration of hardware with AI and accelerate product commercialization.
At the same time, team leadership has changed from original AI head John Giannandrea to John Ternus, Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering.
Giannandrea, who is now out, had just lost control of Siri at the end of March this year.
Ternus, who is taking over robotics, has extensive experience with major hardware products like iPhone and Mac, and has also been responsible for developing home mobile robots and multifunctional robots using the "ELEGNT" framework.
This leadership change is viewed by outsiders as Apple targeting robotics as a new growth curve.
Apple Wants to Proactively Change Its Reactive Strategy
In today's frenzied wave of AI and robotics, Apple has fallen into a strategically reactive position.
In 2024, Apple introduced its system-level AI assistant "Apple Intelligence" at WWDC, but its launch was delayed for various reasons.
In March this year, Apple announced that the smart AI features of Siri would also be delayed until sometime within the next year due to technical reasons.
Even Apple's executive in charge of Siri joked: "The delay in launching Apple Intelligence is both unsightly and embarrassing."
