Netizens jokingly remarked: Hugging Face’s open-source robots don’t seem very smart.
Elon Musk once predicted that by 2040, there would be 10 billion humanoid robots working globally. Now, with Hugging Face officially releasing two new open-source humanoid robots, we are one step closer to making this prophecy a reality.
The two robots open-sourced by Hugging Face are named HopeJR and Reachy Mini.
HopeJR is a full-sized humanoid robot with 66 degrees of freedom, capable of walking and moving its arms.
Reachy Mini, on the other hand, is a desktop robot that can move its head, speak, listen, and be used for testing AI applications.
As for pricing, which many are curious about, HopeJR is priced at approximately $3,000 per unit, while Reachy Mini costs around $250 to $300, depending on tariffs. Compared to the $16,000 Unitree G1, these prices are quite reasonable.
However, there is no specific delivery timeline for these robots yet. According to Hugging Face’s co-founder and CEO, Clem Delangue, they expect to start shipping the first batch of robots by the end of this year at the earliest, and a waitlist is now open.
In short, Hugging Face’s open-source approach means that anyone can assemble, rebuild, and understand how these robots work. With affordable pricing, this ensures that robot technology won’t be dominated by a few large companies with opaque, black-box systems.
